Most people don't know how to write a resume.
I've known this for many years. Before I started my resume business, I worked in HR and I hired for positions at all levels of the organization, from entry-level QA staff for a video game company, to top executives for an advertising agency. And over those 15 years I came to realize that most people just don't have a clue about how to write a resume.
As an HR exec, I knew what I was looking for when I reviewed resumes, so I found it easy write strong resumes for friends and family. That's why, when I finally tired of corporate life, starting a resume writing business was the obvious next step.
And that's when I learned something else: Not only do most people not know how to write a great resume ... they don't even know that they don't know how to write a great resume. And for that reason, many don't even consider hiring a professional writer to help them - they just do some searches online, or buy a book and do it themselves.
And the information they find is all over the place. Some of it is good advice and some of it is bad advice. I see the results every day when people send me their resumes for review, and it's a crying shame because most people would see an immediate increase in their response rate if they could just create a compelling resume.
That's why I've just launched a new free informational website focused entirely on how to write a resume.
Freeresumehelp.net covers all aspects of the resume writing process, and also includes advice on cover letters. There is a free 7-part email resume writing course, there's a selection of recommended books and other resources, and there are lots of free articles on different aspects of resume writing.
So check it out, bookmark it, send the link to a friend. Let's get the word out that most people don't know how to write a resume - and that help is available! We'll be adding to the site all the time and we're happy to hear from you with suggested resources, links or questions.
