Check out the Jibber Jobber blog for Jason Alba's post on the perils of success. He shared an experience we've all encountered--thinking he was a shoe-in for a great job and then finding out he wasn't. Thinking he was the number-one pick for the job stalled his job search while he prepared for a job he didn't get.
It's like pending success is the poison apple in the Snow White fairy tale. The apple is deceptively beautiful--it's red and luscious, but it's deadly--it puts us to sleep. And in job search and careering there is no handsome prince/princess coming along to wake us up and hand us the happily-ever-after!
I've seen my clients lose momentum so fast and hard it's like they've plowed into a brick wall. All because they have a "great opportunity" in the works. And we know these days those great opportunities are not done deals until you're sitting at your new desk for a week!
It's so easy after working so hard to feel we "deserve" to take a breath and enjoy the feeling of pending success--but it puts the breaks on so effectively that it's tough to get started again.
I've seen it happen to me, too. In fact, I doubt anyone is immune to "success-stall." The trick is to recognize it, allow yourself to take a short break, and then jump-start that battery again--fast!
Now what have you got planned for today?!
