I think this is great information. My only worry is that there are too many websites to watch consistently over time. It has come to my attention that one must choose the top or most popular domains to follow, such as LinkedIn and a select few blogs.

Completely agree, Dan. It's really like niching, isn't it? Choose what you want to accomplish, with whom you want to connect, where you want to raise your visibility, and where you can best express your brand. Otherwise your'e too scattered, your brand isn't clear, and you just have no time left for other priorities :-)

It's way too easy to get over-excited about social networking sites when you first start using them. You can end up posting a dozen profiles and, as Dan says, you can't watch them all. More to the point, over time you'll lose track of all the places you've created profiles and then you're left with a trail of outdated information that, ultimately, will detract from your core brand.
That said, very targeted profiles on two or three key sites (either generic ones like LinkedIn or better still industry- or role-specific ones) are worth their weight in gold.

Hi Ron -- yes, posting a dozen profiles in the excitement of a new networking gold rush is very common -- and almost impossible to keep up, as you've observed. I teach my clients to remember it's always about branding -- you can't be everything to everyone, so choose your message and message sites carefully -- and then nurture them. (In fact, I need to take my own advice and update my profile on a couple of sites...)
