Last night I was watching a bit of the All-Stars Baseball game. Somewhere along in the commentary, the announcers had a conversation about the word busker. Having a love for new words (those I'm not familiar with), I paid attention as they went on to explain that a busker is a street performer who earns money by performing a talent. Merriam-Webster defines busker as:
busk·er
Function: noun
Etymology: busk, probably from Italian buscare to procure, gain, from Spanish buscar to look for
chiefly British : a person who entertains in a public place for donations
So why am I writing a post about the word busker? Mostly, because it got me to thinking about how important it is to be open to discovery of new jobs, new titles, new opportunities and to not be stymied by what you already know, or don't. Seek out the unknown. Ask. Listen. Who knows, you just might stumble upon the best job ever!

I'm a busker! Most of the people I know who play music on the street prefer to be called 'buskers' rather than 'street performers'.
I guess because I've been a busker for 14 years it always surprises me that people don't know the word 'busker'. Thank you for spreading the knowledge of it!

Hey Saw Lady:
Thanks for the comment; for whatever reason, though, I can't get your site to work to see photos of lots of NYC buskers. Maybe you noticed the SI & Washington Post links I included in this post re: buskers. In any event, all the best right back at you!
