Many people are feeling fear, anxiety and immobility in the volatile economy we are facing today. As a career coach, I am seeing this fear translate into negative expectations and powerlessness as the unemployment statistics soar.
This week I attended a teleclass by Dr. Lynn Joseph on using a visualization technique that can help job seekers release fear and harness their own power and value to obtain what they are seeking. In studies conducted by Dr. Joseph, the majority of job seekers who used this technique became reemployed more quickly than those who did not.
For anyone who is feeling stuck or hopeless in their job search -- or is just getting started and wants to keep negativity at bay -- Dr. Joseph's book, The Job-Loss Recovery Guide: A Proven Program for Getting Back to Work - Fast! and it's companion guided visualization recording, The Job-Loss Recovery Program, can help.

Learning how to release fear and anxiety is a very useful strategy--certainly necessary for search success. However, as displaced, anxious workers begin to take action and find that new job, it's imperative to take further action so that he/she will not be in that situation again. In addition to gaining expertise in web search, it's very important for employees to learn how to network--ASAP. One of the most frustrating truisms in business is that everyone believes in networking, but very, very few know how to develop a useful intelligence network--much less have one at their beck and call. Yet the latest research shows that people with effective networks make a better salary, get more opportunities, and faster promotions than their peers.
Over the past three years, I wanted to see whether I could teach entry-level employees very sophisticated networking skills. Because of a major project at a company with two out-of-state branches, I took the opportunity to also freely coach 17 "Millennials"--men and women just out of college--a consult no firm would be willing to pay for. I wanted to know whether I could give them a significant leg up on their career. Without exception, I had to teach them networking process, including protocols and scripts for building their networks.
What did I learn from my research? Most fundamentally, lack of street-smarts, including job-search skills, the ability to ask for feedback, or the ability to network for better work opportunities, is about the LACK OF LANGUAGE SKILLS. Our employees are inarticulate, but with a little coaching, they can become expert. In other words, people are loaded with ANXIETY AND FEAR because they don't know how to communicate about their work needs. Recently, one of the Millennials lost his position because of corporate cutbacks. When I asked him about his concerns, he was almost fearless. "I've got that great network, and I already have three appointments set up, before my severance pay is finished off."
I'm not certain how we help the great masses of people gain language skills--but it's going to be necessary to be successful in the New Economy and the Talent Age. As the CEO of the firm put it to me, "whatever you did, Erwin,we need to institutionalize these skill sets. We need assertive, value-contribution employees like these young people." danerwin.com
