In my practice, I meet the coolest, greatest, most wonderful people ever. Today, for example, I met a sales executive who started the conversation with "I think my resume sucks" and I chuckled because I've heard this expression several times before. I mentioned that her words would make a good title for a blog post, then we both laughed and went about our business. Thanks to her wit, I am writing this blog post. You will know your resume sucks if...
* a hiring manager can't tell what you want to do after perusing your resume.
* you yourself want to throw it in the garbage.
* it's loaded with buzzwords and blather.
* it sounds like someone else wrote it.
* it isn't a rock-solid representation of you and your brand.
* it's a boring recollection of your past.
* it looks like a template.
* it doesn't prove to the reader why you can do what you say you're interested in doing.
* it contains negative-sounding language, mistakes or irrelevant information.
* it gets absolutely zero responses.

Just one more to add... Your resume can also suck if it doesn't reveal anything about your personality. I once had a coworker who got his resume noticed by listing kickball as one of his outside interests (He actually played for a local league). If nothing else, it made his resume stand out from the rest.

Oh, that's a great addition....it just made me think of how I got an interview earlier in my career...not because of my experience or education...but because I had listed on my resume that I was involved in field trials - German Shorthair pointers. Thanks Marie!

One huge mistake I see ALL the time occurs more in cover letters than resumes, but I have seen this in resumes as well - saying why YOU would love the job you're applying for, or going on about how impressed you are with the company. Like "it would energize me greatly to be a part of XXXX organization, I think XXXX has a great company philosophy, and I would have a lot of fun working with so-and-so."
My boyfriend starts out every cover letter this way, and I always have to say "Yes D, they know they're a great company with a great philosophy, and they know you'd love it - that's why you're applying!"

Good post, but don't fall into the 'perfect resume' trap. Finding a job is only as good as your process. See: http://virtualjobcoach.com/blog/?p=1205

In this economy many friends have had to look for new work and they had to dust off that old resume and rework it. It is a talent to be a good resume writer, I know that for sure.

I would love for someone to take a look at my resume and give me "real-deal" feedback. In addition to emailing and standard online applications, I created my own website, equipped with resume and autobiographical prose and bit of personality and blog. In addition, I direct potential employers to my LinkedIn.com profile. Please give me feedback, I want to know if this is the right thing to do ... where can I improve to make impact with my resume and land a few solid interviews?

I have seen very interesting resumes and the worst ever. I think that there are people that they are very creative and it is reflected in their resume. One thing that you have to have in mind. It is that your resume has to attract the most attention that it is possible.
