Online Identity Management and Follow-Up

Online identity management in this increasingly connected world is critical to your career and business success. Have you done a Google search of your name? Perhaps you did it a year or more ago. What did you find then? Here are some of the possibilities:

1. No results or very few results for your name. This means in essence you do not “exist” online! Employers and recruiters doing a search for potential candidates on the Internet will never find you there.

2. There are results links, but many of them are about another person! This happens often if you have a common name. Do you really want to “share” your online identity with someone else? Hiring authorities will not take the time to figure out which one of the names listed is really you.

3. You have lots of results and they are indeed about you, but the links are not consistent in revealing your personal brand for job search purposes. Perhaps you want to promote your online identity as a Project Management Professional in financial technology, but the entire first page of results is about your alpaca farm. That’s interesting, but an employer/recruiter short on time my not click to the second page of your results to find more relevant information.

4. There are tons of results with your name and those results are about you and relevant to your online identity goals. Hurray! You have attained digital distinction!

The majority of people care to create a profile on FaceBook or Twitter. BUt there are very few of those who are distinct as you say in your posting. But actually I doubt many people have ever thought about it. And actually I do not see many ways to solve this problem because when you create profile to search for a job, it will be inappropriate to use some nicks instead of your real name. And what should be done then?

It is true that people need to manage their online identity. The company I use is TRUFINA.com. They let me take my shield wherever I go. It is essential to also check your own Criminal background check! It is important for any online purchase, any online relationship and for employers to make sure the customer/employee is verified! It is cheap, (even free if you follow realmadsen on twitter!) and essential! That is my two cents.
