Look for the Hot Spots – the industry/location combinations that are growing and adding jobs right now, and that have been growing for the last 10 years. Your odds of finding a job go up, and your odds of keeping that job go up.
For example, “Professional and Business Services” in Austin grew 1.1% and added 1,300 new jobs in the last 12 months (during a recession), and grew 34% in the last 10 years.
There were 190 Hot Spots in Texas as of September 2009. Although most were in Education, Healthcare and Government, as expected, more than 40% were in industries you might not expect. Here are a few examples:
Dallas had 12 Hot Spots including
- Computer Systems Design and Related Services
- Services to Buildings and Dwellings
- Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation
Houston had 18 Hot Spots including

Great and timely topic. I think one of the hot spots is certainly accounting and finance. As companies start to bounce back from this deep recession they will need to start ramping up on hiring good accountants and Texas is always a hot spot for accounting professionals.
