What You Don't Know Won't Hurt You - NOT!

Growing up, I was told by those I loved/liked the most what you don't know won't hurt you. I must have bought into that, as I've found myself on more than one occasion saying those very words. I don't know why I said them ~ maybe there was nothing better to say at the time. But now, I don't think I'll say that phrase anymore in light of what I've come to know (and believe) as a career management professional. As a job seeker, what you don't know will hurt you and here's why: your competition knows and you don't. And you need to know what they know in order to level the playing field. As a job seeker:

If you don't know how to organize, manage and execute a job search campaign, it will hurt you.

If you don't know how to name and claim your best skills and abilities you prefer to offer to the workplace, it will hurt you.

If you don't know how to build a team of raving fans and supporters, it will hurt you.

If you don't know how to write an outstanding résumé, it will hurt you.

If you don't know how to speak convincingly about you, the product, it will hurt you.

If you aren't familiar with branding concepts (whether you agree with them or not), it will hurt you.

If you don't know how to participate in the social media realm, it will hurt you.

If you don't know how to interview with success, it will hurt you.

If you don't know what type of job you're looking for, it will hurt you.

If you are not equipped to compete with "the best of 'em" in today's competitive market, it will hurt you.

If you have a bad attitude and a negative disposition, it will hurt you.

If you can't cite multiple reasons why someone should hire you, it will hurt you.

If you are unprepared to go to battle in looking for a job in this economic climate, it will hurt you.

If you haven't thought about ways that you can produce income on your own, it will hurt you.

If you still think that it is up to an employer to take care of you, it will hurt you.

If you think that anyone owes you a job, it will hurt you.

If you can't come to grips with the thought of "rejection", it will hurt you.

If you can't keep yourself motivated, on track and in reasonably decent spirits until you find work, it will hurt you.

As a job seeker, what do you know that someone else needs to know to make their job search easier, better or faster?

I understand that your intentions are good and that you are trying to motivate us to be our best through shock value. However I find this approach very negative - it is always easy to point out the things that are wrong. It is not much harder, yet so much more beneficial to point out ways/things to improve. In a society where we are bombarded by stories of "Home Invasions" "Fraud" "Joblessness" and declining standards of living, I am amazed by the negativity and fear-mongering to which the style of your article fits in so well.
