Ask that the recommendation include how the person knows you - as a former colleague, professional association peer, supervisor, mentor, customer, etc. That contributes to the CONTEXT of the comments about your unique value and your accomplishments in the recommendation.

Most of the time people will respond positively to you invitation (if written as mentioned above), once they read your profile at LinkedIn. Particularly if you are networking within your own industry. Therefore make sure to professionally complete your profile before sending "cold call" invitations. So the other person can see value in connecting with you.
