The other day, I was told this:
"When someone is selling you something, you'll either buy it or they will talk you out of it."
I have been thinking about what that sales pro said for a few weeks now, especially as it relates to job seekers and the interviewing process. In an interview, you are trying to 'sell' yourself and according to the line above, you will either talk yourself into the job, or you will talk yourself out of the job. Agree? Disagree?
How, you might wonder, do you as a job candidate talk yourself out of a job? Listed below are 12 ideas on how you, the person sitting in the 'hot seat' might talk yourself out of a job:
- you talk toooooo much from the hiring manager's perspective.
- you talk too little and the hiring manager has to drag information out of you.
- you talk about things that are not relevant or important to the job-at-hand.
- you talk in half-told stories where 'example' and 'end result' aren't freely shared. Here is an example: "Trust me, I am a g-r-e-a-t career coach!" For starters, be wary of the person who says 'trust me' (according to my mentor who told me that years ago) and secondly, don't believe me if I don't bother to freely share an example of how I am a great coach and thirdly, definitely don't believe me if I can't 'back it up' and point you to quick reference resources who will verify my claim."
- you are not prepared to carry on a credible conversation about yourself, your product, and your value/worth to an organization.
- you are bewildered and perplexed by HR's line of questioning rather than anticipating really tough questions and responding with confidence and clarity.
- you drop more names than _________________ (fill-in-the-blank) drops footballs.
- you are so intense in your words and demeanor that the hiring manager asks you to relax.
- you cite negative-sounding words instead of positive, uplifting ones.
- you talk about your problems (financial, emotional, physical, relational, etc.)
- you inquire about time-off, benefits and perks before you ask about expectations.
- you frantically start your research in the employer's lobby as you patiently wait for your name to be called. Then, just like that, Droid dies and you still know nothing about the employer which happens to be the very first question asked by HR.
What are some real life experiences you have had at an interview where you were fairly certain you 'talked yourself right out of the job'?

Billie,
This is a great post...Another observation I have is self-sabotage. Never ask how you did at the end of an interview or say "did I bomb that question?" If you could have done better, use the thank you note as a follow-up opportunity to continue the conversation--briefly and concisely address the area you fill you missed.
Thanks for continuing to educate all of us of the ABC's of job search.

when we come to judge others, it is not by ourselves as we really are that we judge them, but by an image that we have formed of ourselves

I will share my experience. Two years ago I had to go to the Employee Assistant Program, since I had a really hard situation in my home. They treated me great and offered me a lot of psychological help. Thank you!

My crafty goal is to actually create some things instead of just "preparing" to create. So far I've been doing well this year - had a couple crafty dates with girlfriends. Hoping the rest of the year goes well !

Oh love it so much with the floral pants. Sort of like matching to the point of recklessness, plus there is no such thing as too much floral in my opinion. Also with the pink it looks so fab. I think that pink dress is amazing concidering the price, I even tried to replicate it with neon green fabric, untill I ran out!! (turns out not many places really stock neon green satiny, chiffon) :(.

Congratulations on that very difficult decision. I encourage you to stay in that realm of being you, remember there is no competition there.
Make your uniqueness non-negotiable. Realize that when you enter the “competition phase” it is because you abandon your uniqueness and that you will compromise other areas in order to “win“or prove yourself a success.

I am in love with the images, they are like a candy flossed version of Shuji Terayama's work, thanks for sharing this with us!
and the dip bleached denim jacket is just phenomenal! The way it has been dip bleached on the bottom part, but still has the stone washed puckered seams is amazing and I would love to know how this was washed to achieve the end look. Very interesting.

When your friend unbosom himself to you, you will not be afraid to say "no", nor do you withhold the "heart". When he was silent, you still need to listen to his heart, For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all in the hope, joy in the silent and Shared.

There may be without doubt that delight is essentially the most valuable point on this planet. Lacking it, existence could be empty and meaningless. pleasure is made up in contentment. A guy who's dissatisfied with his current issue is continually in distress.

Belstaff Leather is not only the motorcycle jacket, but also known as the stars jacket, we could see more famous stars wore them in the movies as well as other casual occasions. The Belstaff Outlet was designed with three separate components to allow the two adventurers to face all conditions they would be likely to experience on their journey. Back in the history of Belstaff UK, in 1924, Harry Grasberg and his father in law, Eli Belo itch, pooled their talents to produce, a cozy collection of waterproofs that all the foggy Albion inhabitances needed. Belstaff Clothing sturdily constructed and cleverly designed to combat the worst of the British weather, these prototypes of today’s wide range fashion collection soon caught the popular imagination.
