In my work with clients, I routinely invite them to create an agenda of a few items they would like to focus on in our session together. They don’t “have to” – I simply invite them to if they find it helpful or useful. With permission, I share one job seeker’s list with you. If you are looking for work, what does your list look like? If you could offer but one single piece of constructive advice to job seekers of today, what wisdom might you share?
- My resume sucks.
- My interviewing skills are not great.
- I am not a very good writer or speaker.
- I hate talking about myself.
- I get very nervous, especially when I am talking to people I don’t know.
- I am overwhelmed by all of this social media stuff.
- I am totally frustrated with my job search and don’t know where to start.
- I have no idea what my “personal brand” is because I have never thought about it or even heard of such a thing until you mentioned it.
- I do not like networking and do not like large groups of people. Even hearing the word networking bothers me.
- I am not really looking for a job even though I need to because I don’t have one, but I don’t even know how to find one anymore. Everything has changed.
